Iowa is the heart of the country, and many people have never been there. In 1989, Iowa became the first nation state to allow riverboat casinos. Soon, riverboat casinos were established along the Iowa banks the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Iowa saw riverboat gambling resurgent and flourishing.

Iowa’s first Native American tribe casino opened around this time. Iowa allowed land-based casinos in mid 2000s. The riverboats are slowly disappearing as new, larger land-based casinos are built. These land-based casinos offer a Vegas-like experience without the flashy lights. Riverboats are definitely worth the trip.

Iowa is home to twenty casinos. Many people still travel up and down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, with others in the central region. There are casinos all along Iowa’s length, from the Des Moines area to the Missouri River casinos, to the Des Moines casinos, and the Quad Cities and Dubuque casinos along the Mississippi River. Riverboats are not the only type of casino along rivers. Iowa still has six riverboat casinos. As these casinos create new riverboat casinos to replace the costly upkeep of existing ones, this number will start to decrease.

Sioux City in Iowa will likely be the next location to build a land-based casino. They also plan on retiring their riverboat. These casinos can be found all over Iowa. You don’t have to travel far to find one. Many casinos offer more than gambling. Many casinos have fine dining options and hotels nearby. Many casinos have live music venues, while others offer resort-style facilities with spas and golf.

You can also find live racing. Bluffs Run Greyhound Park can be found at Horseshoe Casino, Council Bluffs. The Mystique Casino Racetrack offers greyhound racing. Thoroughbred racing is offered at Prairie Meadows Casino, Altoona just outside Des Moines. It may seem difficult to believe, if you’ve never been to Iowa We1Win. They can, and do. They have evolved into more than just a stop on the road. Visit them sometime and check them out. You won’t regret it.
